Last week, I shared Part 1 of How to Handle Fear, and I promised to be back with some specific scriptures you could write on 3×5 cards to give you strength and focus on God rather than the fearful things we see in the news. So…here I am…keeping my promise. With words of Scripture. Words of encouragement. Words to give you strength in these perilous times!
Would you like this verse to be a reality in your life? It is most definitely possible!
“GOD met me more than halfway, He freed me from my anxious fears.” –Psalm 34:4 (The Message version)
Billy Graham speaks clearly how to conquer fear, anxiety, tension, and worry.
“Mankind has always been beset by worry, and the pressures of modern life have aggravated the problem…Many of you are filled with a thousand anxieties. Bring them to Jesus Christ by faith…I am learning in my own life, day by day, to keep my mind centered on Christ; the worries and anxieties and concerns of the world pass, and nothing but ‘perfect peace’ is left in the human heart.” Billy Graham also says, “Memorizing is most important. ‘Thinking God’s thoughts’ will take the place of worried, anxious concerns.” –The Christian Workers’ Handbook
One of God’s promises:
“Know this well, then. Take it to heart right now: GOD is in Heaven above; GOD is on Earth below. He’s the only God there is. Obediently live by His rules and commands which I’m giving you today so that you’ll live well and your children after you…” –Deuteronomy 4 (The Message version)
“The Quality of Fear” by David Brooks (New York Times – 10/20/2014)
“Fear, of course, breeds fear. Fear is a fog that alters perception and clouds thought.” “…you wind up with an emotional spiral that develops its own momentum.”
What you focus on will grow. What will you decide to focus on?
(As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.) The Lord God tells us that what we focus on will grow. So, dear ones, it is time to choose: Will you follow God or fear?
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” –Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)
Know this: God can be trusted.
“God is the Blessed Controller of all things.” –I Timothy 6:15 (Phillips version)
Beloved, God can be trusted. Even when things don’t make sense. He is a GOOD FATHER. He watches after His children. The question is: ARE you one of His children?
Write these down.
Write them out for yourself (maybe on 3×5 cards), so you can have these verses with you when you need them. Please consider memorizing them as well. Share them with friends and family. And especially with your kids!
“Seven times each day I stop and shout praises for the way you keep everything running right. For those who love what you reveal, everything fits—no stumbling around in the dark for them. I wait expectantly for your salvation, GOD, I do what you tell me. My soul guards and keeps all your instructions—oh, how much I love them! I follow your directions, abide by your counsel, my life’s an open book before you.” –From Psalm 119 (The Message version)
“Keep company with GOD; get in on the best. Open up before GOD, keep nothing back. He’ll do whatever needs to be done.” … “Quiet down before GOD, be prayerful before Him.” –From Psalm 37 (The Message version)
“When I get really afraid I come to You in trust. I’m proud to praise God, fearless now I trust in God. What can mere mortals do?” –From Psalm 56 (The Message version)
“Yes indeed—God is my salvation. I trust. I won’t be afraid. GOD—yes GOD!—is my strength and song, best of all, my salvation!” –From Isaiah 12 (The Message version)
“Depend on God and keep at it because in the LORD GOD you have a sure thing.” –From Isaiah 26 (The Message version)
How to Handle Fear and Disasters.
First try to discover the source of your fear.
Then do this:
- Bible study & Prayer for wisdom & insight
- Memorize Scriptures that pertain to your concern/fear/praise/thanksgiving
- Remember and meditate on God’s promises. Do a word search to find fresh verses to “chew on”
- Serve others (it gets your mind off yourself and your fears)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” –Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV – emphasis mine)
“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” –I Peter 5:7 (KJV)
I’ve shared some “ammunition” to fight fear. To choose God. To choose faith. To choose trust in God’s tender loving care for His children.
If you are not sure if you are His child, it is time to get that settled. I’d love to talk with you, to help you understand just what that means to be in the family of God. Send an email through the contact form.
I will respond as soon as possible and we can compare calendars and set up a time to talk.
Questions? Leave a comment. It matters! YOU matter!
Until next time…
This verse is such a good one, Pam…“GOD met me more than halfway, He freed me from my anxious fears.” — Psalm 34:4 (The Message version)
When I stay in fear, I am essentially holding my breath and tensing up. Fear for me is about doubting God at some deep level…then the temptation is to take matters into my own hands…wrestle control from the One who knows my heart best. How absurd is that???
Keeping God’s word in my heart and in my mind dispels fear…like light dispels darkness.
Thank you for this good reminder, Pam.
Hi Lane Arnold, thanks for stopping by with your wisdom and encouragement. I’ve heard that fear is the opposite of LOVE. I think that just might be true. When we truly love and are loved, we trust. When we trust, we don’t fear. Praising the Lord that He stays WITH us throughout the journey! God bless you bunches!
I am so glad to meet you from the Bless a Blogger Linkup! Mentoring and Discipleship are some of my number one needs and priorities– it’s the THING I’m always glad out here. Bless you!
Hi Lorretta, It’s a pleasure to meet you, too! It’s wonderful to connect and encourage one another. God speaks often in “one anothers” in the Bible. As in mentoring and discipleship. He is such an amazing role model! God bless you bunches, Lorretta!
These verses and your wonderful encouragement are beautiful Pam!
