Remember the story of the woman who gave all she had in Mark 12? “They all gave out of their wealth, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” (verse 44)
Did Jesus say we are all to give everything that we have in order to worship and honor Him? No. He did not. “What our Teacher did imply, though, is that God counts differently than we do. There was something about that woman’s heart that determined the value of what she had to offer to God.” –Our Daily Bread
And wherever you are…
He calls you to be a fully devoted follower. To give Him your ambitions. To give Him your plans. What He gives back is beyond anything you can think or imagine. Guaranteed. “Sacrificial offerings motivated by our love for God will always be priceless expressions of worship.”—Our Daily Bread (Like the woman in Mark 12.)
The world may belittle you
The world may look at you with the ridicule like they looked at Jesus. Or try to change your mind. Most likely, if you are “different”, they will not value your “career” choice, which is not a “career” at all. It is a “life” choice to be a fully devoted follower. Even if the world or your family and friends belittle and scorn you for “wasting” your education, keep looking up. Foreign missions is not the only way to lay your life on God’s altar.
You will be amazed
Every act of giving can be an expression of worship and loving obedience. When you follow the Lord fully, wherever He leads, you will be amazed that your desire for fancy cars, homes, elaborate vacations, parties, status, promotions and stuff will fade. The wonderful thing is that WHATEVER you give up for Christ will seem like a privilege, not like a loss.
Reality check
Don’t expect applause or approval from the world. Many of your family may continue to reject your choices. They may not understand that in Him, you have EVERYTHING! An inner peace that passes all understanding. Joy. Contentment.
Jesus changes everything!
He changes hearts, goals, plans, and the need for comfort and “stuff”. He will prove to you that He is absolutely all you need. Always and forever.
Plow a straight furrow
When you put your hand to the plow and decide to not look back, you will join the group in Hebrews 11:38, “…for whom the world is not worthy”. Worthy…not for anything you do, but because of whose you are!
You are His!
He will do what He will do in you. Through you. When you are sold out, hook, line and sinker, you become that follower that leaves all that the world says is necessary for happiness. And you follow his direction. His “call”. Rejoice!
A matter of the heart
So, like the widow in the story in Mark 12, priceless worship is a matter of the heart.
