Real Moms’ Real Questions: Can I Really Make a Difference?

“Every Christ-like word and deed from you dispels an equal amount of darkness. Let Christ shine through you today.”
(Turning Point with David Jeremiah devotional)

It is not just words.
God clearly tells us to walk as children of Light. So, what does that mean exactly? God’s nature is Light. It is one of His Names. The Light of the world. And in Him is no darkness at all.

The Light makes flowers and people grow lovelier. Let your light shine on those around you. How? It takes TIME!

Learning His nature.
By spending TIME in His word—the Bible—we learn more about His nature. And the more we learn about His nature, the more we want to leave our old nature behind. That pre-Jesus nature.

The darkness is overcome by the Light. By faith we believe it. And in believing, it naturally becomes a part of us. LIGHT. It is a transformation that is beyond explanation. That is where faith comes in. As we continue walking in the Light, gradually, more and more Christ-like words and deeds become natural.

We live in a disconnected world.
People are not inter-dependent on each other as they were in years past. By getting creative, we experience how beautifully small things make a big difference. We learn and choose to be even more intentional about taking TIME to connect. What does that “look” like?

Small things matter.
A smile and a thank you to the cashier at the grocery store, a candy bar along with a tip for the waitress, a cup of water for the runner in the marathon, a banana for the hot and sweating carnival worker, an understanding smile for the mom of the cranky tired crying little kid, movie tickets to a single mom for her and her children, eye contact along with a gentle touch on the arm of the parent who just found out her child is taking drugs, a letter to a serviceman, a thank you to a veteran, offering to pick up some things at the store for an older person living alone—to name a few ways you CAN make a difference. A BIG difference in someone’s life!

Trials transform us.
And we also see trials with the fresh eyes of the Spirit within us…And that they refine us and transform us. We become even more trusting of Creator God as experientially we begin to KNOW that He sees us through the tough times. Not around them, but through them. Another blessing is that trials make us more sensitive to others and their specific heartfelt needs.

So, we see that when His Light shines on our darkness, showing us the way through, we are transformed because we cannot stay the way we were in the darkness. We are drawn to the Light. And others are drawn to that Light in us. It is a beautiful thing!

And we make a difference! Yes, we do!
